Experience Vancouver’s most alive & vibrant neighbourhoods
Vancouver BC is the largest city in British Columbia and the third largest city in Canada. Vancouver is a coastal seaport surrounded by the ocean on one side, mountains on 2 sides and the US border to the south. As the physical location of Vancouver limits its urban expansion, Vancouver is a very densely populated city, actually the 4th most densely populated in North America. Fortunately, when the city was in its infancy, the city planners of Vancouver realized that there needed to be large green space in a major metropolitan city. In Vancouver they left large green belt areas, beaches without development right on the water and unobstructed views of the spectacular North Shore mountains. Thanks to its residential density, its large population and its desirable climate and political situation, Vancouver is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 places to live worldwide for its liveability and quality of life. Vancouver was also the first city to rank in the top ten of the world's most liveable cities for 5 consecutive years.
Vancouver's origins are found in the settlements of Gastown and Yaletown. Gastown was born in the newly logged western edge of the Hastings Mill property. A tavern was set up on a plank between two stumps. The proprietor, Gassy Jack, persuaded the millworkers to build him a tavern. That original building was the cornerstone of a huge expansion of shops and hotels to be the newly minted city of Vancouver, 12 years later in 1886. Soon after, the railway arrived and terminated in Yaletown. This was to be the lifeblood that would feed the city well into the new century and right to this day. While Vancouver's Yaletown is now a collection of trendy shops, high end condos and microbreweries, the old still remains with buildings like the Yaletown Roundhouse where the trains used to turn to go back across Canada.
Vancouver has quite a number of areas to choose from when looking for accommodations. Downtown is mostly condos and townhomes. The North Shore features large stately homes and oceanfront properties and elsewhere in the city, for instance in White Rock, Surrey or Richmond, you can find homes and houses that are ideal for families on a budget. Whatever your need, Vancouver has something for everyone, and from luxury to cozy.
